Tips for saving money on translation services

1). Use a glossary and reserved word list.

Put some time into building up a list of reserved words (words that should not be translated) and also a glossary of common terms. Your Language Service Provider (LSP) should be able to help translate the glossaries prior to the main translation, and this can make it significantly easier for the translator, speed them up and reduce your costs.

2) Desk Top Publishing (DTP) should not be more than 5% of the translation cost

There are many tools used by LSP's  that automate the DTP process, so it should not be a significant portion of the total project cost.

3) Rise of the machine

Allow your LSP to use a Machine Translation (MT) / Post Edit (PE) if they feel it is suitable for the project. You will get the same quality output but it can help speed up the translation project and lower your cost (providing the LSP passes this on)

4)Don't pay twice

If you have a lot of repeat content make sure this is taken into account when ordering a translation project.

5) Don't buy what you don't need

There is a tendency for people to buy a level of translation that is not required. If it is an internal business document does it need a full second review? The LSP should be providing a very good translation on the first pass and second reviews or back translations are not normally required for general translation projects. Likewise certified translations are more expensive than non-certified translations although the actual translation will more than likely be exactly the same.
